  • Each Panelist will first present 6-10 minutes on the learning based image/video compression he/she is working on (30-45 minutes)
  • Moderator will ask a few common questions for the panelists to answer (30 minutes)
  • Open to the audience for more questions (15 minutes)

    Prof. Siwei Ma

    School of Computer Science

    Siwei Ma is currently Boya Distinguished Professor in Peking University. He received the B.S. degree from Shandong Normal University, China, in 1999, and the Ph.D. degree in computer science from the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China, in 2005. He held a postdoctoral position with the University of Southern California from 2005 to 2007. His research interests are video coding and video processing. He has authored over 300 technical articles in refereed journals and conferences. From 2002, he has been actively participating in the video coding standardization activity. As the China AVS video group chair, he led the development of AVS3 video coding standard, which has been used for 8K UHDTV broadcasting in China.  


    Prof. Lu Yu

    Director of the Institute of Information and Communication Networks Engineering

    Lu Yu is a Distinguished Professor in the College of Information Science and Electronic Engineering at Zhejiang University. Her research areas include 2D/3D visual content representation and compression, human visual perception and image/video quality assessment. She developed a series of technologies adopted for multiple image/video coding related IEEE, ISO/IEC as well as ISO/IEC and ITU-T joint standards. She is the Convenor of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 4, MPEG Video Coding, and leading standardization activities such as immersive video coding, essential video coding, low complexity enhancement video coding, and neural network compression, etc.


    Prof. Zhan Ma

    Zhan Ma received his Ph.D. from New York University in 2011, and his B.S. and M.S. from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China, in 2004 and 2006 respectively. Dr. Ma is an Associate Professor at the School of Electronic Science and Engineering, Nanjing University, China. From 2011 to 2014, Zhan worked in several research labs in the USA focusing on video coding standardization and codec ASIC design. Dr. Ma’s research focuses include computational imaging and AI-based future video coding. Dr. Ma was awarded the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, 2018 PCM Best Paper Finalist, 2019 IEEE BTS Best Paper Award, and 2020 IEEE MMSP Grand Challenge Best Image Coding Solution..


    Prof. Dong Liu

    Dong Liu received the B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), Hefei, China, in 2004 and 2009, respectively. He was a Member of Research Staff with Nokia Research Center, Beijing, China, from 2009 to 2012. He joined USTC as a faculty member in 2012 and became a Professor in 2020.

    His research interests include image and video processing, coding, analysis, and data mining. He has authored or co-authored more than 200 papers in international journals and conferences, which were cited more than 9000 times according to Google Scholar (h-index is 40). He has more than 20 granted patents. He has several technique proposals adopted by standardization groups. He received the 2009 IEEE TCSVT Best Paper Award and the VCIP 2016 Best 10% Paper Award. He and his students were winners of several technical challenges held in ISCAS 2022, ICCV 2019, ACM MM 2019, ACM MM 2018, ECCV 2018, CVPR 2018, and ICME 2016.

    He is a Senior Member of IEEE, CCF, and CSIG, an elected member of MSA-TC of IEEE CAS Society, and an elected member of Multimedia TC of CSIG. He serves or had served as the Chair of IEEE 1857.11 Standard Working Subgroup (previously known as FVC-SG), an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Signal Processing, an Organizing Committee Member for VCIP 2022, ChinaMM 2022, ICME 2021, ICME 2019, etc.


    Dr. Jiaying Liu

    Jiaying Liu received the PhD degree (Hons.) in computer science from Peking University, Beijing China, 2010. She is currently an Associate Professor, Boya Young Fellow with the Wangxuan Institute of Computer Technology, Peking University, China. She has authored more than 100 technical articles in refereed journals and proceedings, and holds 70 granted patents. Her current research interests include multimedia signal processing, compression, and computer vision. She is a senior member of IEEE/CSIG, and a distinguished member of CCF. She was a visiting scholar with the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, from 2007 to 2008. She was a visiting researcher with Microsoft Research Asia, in 2015 supported by the Star Track Young Faculties Award.

    Dr. Liu has served as a member of Multimedia Systems and Applications Technical Committee (MSA TC), and Visual Signal Processing and Communications Technical Committee (VSPC TC) in IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. She received the IEEE ICME 2020 Best Paper Award and IEEE MMSP 2015 Top10% Paper Award. She has also served as the Associate Editor of the IEEE Trans. on Image Processing, the IEEE Trans. on Circuit System for Video Technology and Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation, the Technical Program Chair of ACM MM Asia-2023/IEEE ICME-2021/ACM ICMR-2021/IEEE VCIP-2019, the Area Chair of CVPR-2021/ECCV-2020/ICCV-2019, ACM ICMR Steering Committee member and the CAS Representative at the ICME Steering Committee. She was the APSIPA Distinguished Lecturer (2016-2017).


    Yan Wang

    Yan Wang is an assistant professor of Institute for AI Industry Research (AIR), Tsinghua University. His main research interests include AI-based data compression, perception algorithm in Intelligent Transportation and neural network compression. His representative works in AI-based codec include the checkerboard context model, the efficient learned image compression model (ELIC) and the learned lossless JPEG recompression model (MLCC). With PO-ELIC, he achieves the first place in CLIC learned image compression competition during CVPR 2022.
